Rontgen’s curiosity was piqued when he noticed that a fluorescent screen in his lab started to glow even though it was shielded from visible light. Through experimentation, he determined that the glow was caused by a previously unknown type of radiation, which he tentatively named “X-rays” for their unknown nature.
